Remove Extra Spaces Without Losing Paragraphs

Clean repeated spaces and tabs line by line while preserving existing line breaks.

Pasted text can accumulate repeated spaces and tabs from tables, documents, or manual alignment. The Remove Extra Spaces tool cleans each line separately: it replaces every run of spaces or tabs with one ordinary space and trims the ends. It then rejoins the lines with their line breaks intact. That is useful for prose but can damage spacing that encodes structure.

Understand the exact change

Input such as “ red blue ” becomes “red blue.” A tab between words also becomes one space. A blank line remains a blank line because the tool processes each input line individually. If a line contained only spaces, its result is empty, but it is still a line in the output.

This differs from Remove All Whitespace, which deletes every whitespace character, including word separators and line breaks. It also differs from Trim Lines, which removes only leading and trailing whitespace and leaves internal alignment alone. Choose based on whether interior spacing carries meaning.

A safe cleanup sequence

Copy a small representative block with a heading, a paragraph break, a tab, and an indented line. Run the cleaner and compare it with the original. Check that the intended paragraph separation remains and that no indentation was needed. If you only want to remove ragged edges, Trim Lines is a narrower change.

For material copied from a PDF, extra spaces may coexist with line breaks inserted at visual margins. Clean spacing and line breaks as separate steps so you can tell which operation changed the document’s structure. Keep the raw text until the result has been reviewed.

Content that needs caution

Code indentation, ASCII art, fixed-width columns, poetry, and some data formats depend on repeated spaces. A general cleaner has no knowledge of those rules. CSV-like text can also contain spaces inside quoted fields where replacing them changes field values. Review such material manually or use a format-aware tool.

The cleaner uses ordinary spaces and tabs for its internal collapse; it does not rewrite every kind of Unicode whitespace inside a line. If the text contains nonbreaking spaces, check them separately rather than assuming this operation standardized them.

Finish with a visual check

Inspect both the first and last line after cleaning. Trimming can remove deliberate leading or trailing spaces used by a target system, while paragraph breaks should remain. For normal prose, the result is a tidy starting point for editing, not a substitute for a complete document review.

  • Compare a short excerpt first.
  • Keep line breaks if paragraphs matter.
  • Use Trim Lines for edge cleanup only.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool remove blank lines?

No. It processes and rejoins every input line; lines containing only spaces become empty lines.

Will tabs survive?

No. A run of tabs or spaces inside a line becomes one ordinary space.

Can I use it on code?

Only after checking indentation and alignment requirements; the tool trims and collapses those spaces.
