Line Break Cleanup: Empty Lines, Joins, and Paragraphs
Choose between removing empty lines, joining lines, and normalizing repeated paragraph breaks.
Line breaks can mean a new line of a list, a visual wrap from a PDF, or a paragraph boundary. Three tools modify them in different ways. Choose the operation by the structure you want to retain, because a cleanup that looks harmless on a short sample can flatten a long document.
In this guide
Remove Empty Lines
Remove Empty Lines drops each line whose trimmed content is empty, then rejoins the remaining lines with single line breaks. It preserves nonempty lines in their original order, including their leading and trailing spaces. A line that contains only tabs or spaces counts as empty.
This is appropriate for compacting a list with stray blank rows. It is a poor fit when blank lines mark paragraphs, since that distinction disappears. If the text has paragraphs, compare the result against the source before copying it forward.

Remove all line breaks
Remove Line Breaks replaces each CRLF or LF break with one space. It turns a multiline selection into one line, including breaks that separated paragraphs. It does not inspect neighboring spaces, so a space that was already adjacent to the break may become a double space.
This can repair prose wrapped at a fixed width, but it can also join list entries or headings into a confusing sentence. Clean extra spaces after joining if needed, and watch for places where the original line break stood for a stronger boundary than a space.
Normalize paragraph breaks
Normalize Paragraph Breaks compresses a run of two or more line breaks, including any intervening whitespace, into exactly two line breaks. Single line breaks remain unchanged. A passage with three or four blank separators becomes a consistent single blank line between blocks.
The implementation does not infer paragraphs from sentence meaning. It only acts on existing repeated breaks. This makes it useful for inconsistent vertical spacing, but it cannot restore a paragraph boundary that a prior operation removed.
Decide before bulk cleanup
Make a three-block sample: one hard line break inside a paragraph, one deliberate blank line, and several accidental blank lines. Try each tool and compare. For imported documents, retain an untouched copy so lost structure can be recovered. Once the line-break behavior is right, use space cleanup as a separate, more predictable pass.
When a list uses empty lines to separate categories, removing those empty lines can still leave each entry readable while erasing the category boundary. If that boundary matters, preserve a heading for each group or choose paragraph normalization instead. Visual compactness alone is not enough to decide whether structure was preserved.
- Compact a list: Remove Empty Lines.
- Unwrap line-wrapped prose: Remove Line Breaks, then inspect joins.
- Keep paragraphs with uniform spacing: Normalize Paragraph Breaks.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing line breaks insert spaces?
Yes. Each CRLF or LF line break is replaced with a single space.
Does normalizing paragraphs remove single line breaks?
No. It only compresses runs of at least two breaks with optional intervening whitespace.
Can a tool recover lost paragraphs?
No. Once paragraph separators have been removed, the original structure requires the source or manual editing.
