Normalize Quotes
Normalize Quotes replaces several curly and angled quotation marks with straight ASCII quotes.
Example: normalize quotes
“Hello”
"Hello"
How to use this tool
- Paste text with curly or angled quotes.
- Run Normalize Quotes to convert mapped marks.
- Check contractions and any quote-like symbols that remain.
How the result is made
The current transform maps double curly and angle quotes to `"`, and selected single curly quotes to an apostrophe. A phrase enclosed in “curly quotes” becomes a phrase enclosed in straight double quotes. Other punctuation and spacing are retained. The direction is fixed: smart quotes become straight quotes.
When to use it
Use it to prepare copied text for plain-text fields, compare two versions that differ only in common quote styles, or clean a small data sample. It is narrower than Remove Punctuation because it preserves the fact that text was quoted. JSON String Escape can then escape straight quotes for a string literal.
Details to check
Not every quotation-like symbol is in the map, and language-specific punctuation may remain. Changing curly quotes can also affect typography and contractions. If quoted text will become code or JSON, still use the proper encoder for that format rather than assuming quote normalization makes it safe.
Questions people ask
Can it turn straight quotes into smart quotes?
No. The current direction is toward straight quotes only.
Does it delete quotes?
No. It substitutes mapped quotes.
Is the result JSON-safe?
Not automatically; use JSON String Escape for a JSON literal.
