How to use this tool

  1. Paste the text to estimate.
  2. Choose a words-per-minute rate, or keep the default 200.
  3. Read the word count and rounded seconds together.

How the result is made

The tool counts words with the site tokenizer, divides by the selected rate, converts minutes to seconds, and rounds up. The default rate is 200 words per minute; the control is bounded from 20 to 1,000. The output shows both word count and the rate used, so the estimate can be interpreted. For example, 200 words at the default 200 words per minute yields 60 seconds before any allowance for slower reading.

When to use it

Use it to compare the approximate length of draft articles, plan a presentation handout, or set a reading-time label based on a consistent assumption. Speaking Time Calculator uses a separate default of 130 words per minute for aloud delivery. Word Counter gives the raw count without an assumed pace.

Details to check

Real reading speed varies with language, difficulty, layout, and reader. The value is an arithmetic estimate, not a measurement of a person’s behavior. Very short inputs round up to a whole second; the result should not be presented as an exact promise.

Questions people ask

Is 200 words per minute a measured reader speed here?

No. It is the default assumption in the calculator.

Can I change the rate?

Yes, within the tool’s bounded range.

Why does a tiny text show one second?

The calculation rounds positive durations upward to a whole second.
