URL Encoder Decoder
URL Encoder Decoder converts text to and from percent-encoded URL component form.
Example: url encoder decoder
a b
a%20b
How to use this tool
- Choose encode or decode.
- Paste the text or encoded component.
- Review reserved characters and any decode error.
What gets encoded
Encoding uses JavaScript encodeURIComponent, which percent-encodes many characters that would have structural meaning in a URL component. A space becomes “%20” and “&” becomes “%26.” Use this for a query value or path segment, not for an entire URL when you want slashes and delimiters to remain structural.
How decoding behaves
Decoding applies decodeURIComponent after treating plus signs as spaces. This makes plus-delimited form data more convenient, but a literal “+” must be represented as “%2B” if you want to preserve it through this decoder. Malformed percent escapes can produce an error rather than a repaired string.
Keep the purpose clear
Percent encoding is a transport syntax, not encryption or secret storage. URL Slug Generator instead creates a lowercase, hyphenated label; it is not a reversible encoder. HTML Entity Encoder Decoder is for HTML text contexts and uses a different set of escape rules.
Questions people ask
Does this encode a whole URL safely as-is?
It encodes URL components, including structural punctuation such as slashes.
Will “+” decode to a plus sign?
No; this decoder first treats plus as a space. Use %2B for a literal plus.
Is percent encoding encryption?
No; the original text is recoverable by decoding.
