Add Line Numbers
Add Line Numbers prefixes each input line with an increasing number.
Example: add line numbers
alpha beta
1. alpha 2. beta
How to use this tool
- Paste text with one item per line.
- Set Starting number if it should not begin at one.
- Run the tool and check numbering across blank lines.
How the result is made
The tool counts physical lines and writes a decimal number, a period, and a space before each one. With the default start of one, “alpha” and “beta” become “1. alpha” and “2. beta”. The Start control lets you choose another initial value within a bounded range.
When to use it
Use it to reference list entries, prepare numbered instructions, or compare line positions in a text sample. Remove Line Numbers strips common leading decimal prefixes later. Number List Generator produces the numbers themselves, rather than numbering existing text.
Details to check
Blank lines are numbered too because they are physical lines. Existing numbers are not detected or replaced, so rerunning the tool can add a second prefix. The start setting is clamped by the tool, and huge lists remain subject to the general input limit.
Questions people ask
Are blank lines counted?
Yes. Each physical line receives a prefix.
Will it overwrite old numbers?
No. It prepends new numbers.
Can I remove the prefixes later?
Remove Line Numbers handles common decimal prefixes.
