Natural Sort

Natural Sort orders line items so embedded digit runs compare as numbers.

item 10

How to use this tool

  1. Paste one numbered item per line.
  2. Run Natural Sort and compare digit-bearing items.
  3. Review mixed formats such as dates or dotted versions separately.

How the result is made

The tool uses a locale-aware collator with numeric comparison enabled. Thus “item 2” sorts before “item 10”, where a lexical sort can put “item 10” first. Each line remains intact; only its position changes. Other letters compare with base sensitivity.

When to use it

Use it for filenames, version-like labels, inventory items, or any list mixing text and numbers. Sort Lines Alphabetically is better when you want strictly text-oriented ordering. Sort Lines by Length answers a different question about how long each line is.

Details to check

Natural sorting is not a full version-number parser: a sequence with several dotted numeric parts can still need domain-specific handling. The browser locale influences letter ordering. Blank lines and duplicates remain unless you clean them first.

Questions people ask

Why is item 2 before item 10?

Digit runs are compared by numeric value.

Does it change the numbers themselves?

No. It only reorders lines.

Will it remove blank or duplicate lines?

No. Use the cleaning tools first if needed.
