Compare Two Lists
Compare Two Lists groups distinct lines into first-only, shared, and second-only results.
Example: compare two lists
red blue
Only in first: red
How to use this tool
- Paste the first list and the second list into their separate fields.
- Run Compare Two Lists.
- Review the three groups for whitespace and case differences.
How the result is made
The tool turns nonblank lines from each input into sets. It then reports “Only in first”, “In both”, and “Only in second”, preserving first-seen order within each group. Repeated identical lines collapse because a set holds one copy of each value.
When to use it
Use it to compare two URL inventories, check membership changes in a checklist, or inspect the overlap between two simple lists. Text Diff Checker compares corresponding line positions and marks additions and removals; it does not perform this set-style membership grouping.
Details to check
Line comparison is exact and case-sensitive. Leading spaces, trailing spaces, and different capitalization create different entries. Blank lines are ignored. Trim Lines or Remove Duplicate Lines can help prepare input, but check whether normalizing the source would hide meaningful differences.
Questions people ask
Are duplicates counted?
No. Each input is treated as a set of distinct nonblank lines.
Are comparisons case-insensitive?
No. Exact line text is compared.
How is this different from Text Diff?
It reports membership, not line-by-line position changes.
